Christmas Decorating – Our Family

Christmas is our family’s favorite time of year, and for us it starts in mid-November! Christmas decorating is one of our most anticipated traditions that we all enjoy. Steve gets the Christmas boxes out of the shed and stacks them in the living room. Then we bring in the box with the Christmas Tree. The boys were so excited! And they couldn’t wait to help daddy put the tree together.

Christmas Decorating is such a special time for our family! We love putting up the tree and as our kids have gotten older they have come to enjoy it just as much as we do. It's delightful seeing their excitement and watching them help decorate.

Graham was only 11 months old when we were doing this last year, so I don’t think he remembers it. This year he was mesmerized by the lights and tried so hard to help put ornaments on the tree. Dominic is now a Christmas decorating pro and put more ornaments on himself than either Steve or I did.

I love seeing all of our special ornaments on the tree. Each year I’m reminded of so many wonderful times as we hang them. We have the first set of ornaments that Steve and I ever bought, we pieced the set together ourselves to make a Harry Potter theme. Pictured above is the ornament that we got the day that Steve proposed at Biltmore. And each of our boys have a 1st Christmas ornament with their names and pictures. Over the weekend we bought a shooting star ornament for our daughter that we miscarried earlier this year. This December I have plans to do a Christmas countdown of activities and fun things for us to do together. The boys are going to be making some ornaments for us to add to the tree.

The boys made sure that they got to have some fun with the Christmas tree box and the bubble wrap. I wonder if the two of them will even be able to fit in the box together next year. They’re growing up so fast!

This is also the first year that we’ve ever decorated outside! Other years we’ve lived in apartments or condos and haven’t really been able to decorate outside. Last year we were worn out from our move at the end of November and decided to keep things simple and not decorate outside. But we’ve come to really love the small duplex that we live in. It’s perfect for us and we were excited to put up some outside decorations.

Then we finished off the evening looking at Christmas books. We keep these put away for most of the year, but they come out with our Christmas decorations and stay out until we put the decorations away. We love reading these books to our children; many of them are books from my childhood that I loved. Our reading time together is extra special when these books are out.

Christmas decorating marks the beginning of the Christmas season for us. I think next year we’ll have a new tradition – looking back at pictures from decorating previous years. Seeing how much our kids have grown, hopefully seeing how our family has grown and added more members. In the future we’ll be looking back at a house we no longer live in. And we’ll be remembering the special moments of decorating together as a family. We will treasure these photos and these memories for the rest of our lives and I think our children will treasure them too.

Our Family’s Morning

I decided to pull out the camera and document our family’s morning – well a couple hours of it.

Every morning I am awoken by Graham coming into my room and asking to get in bed and nurse. He had been coming in at about 6:30am. Thanks to the time change, though, he has come in at 5:30am the past 2 mornings. A bit earlier than I would like, but at least I get to enjoy some snuggles from my quickly growing boy. When we’re all ready to get up, we move to the living room for the kids to play, and I head to the kitchen to make breakfast, coffee, and tea.

The boys have fun playing while Daddy starts his morning with coffee and Pokemon.

The boys are rarely ready for breakfast as soon as they wake up. They like to get some playtime in first. Usually about 1 hour after they wake up we move to breakfast time. I almost always make them oatmeal with peanut butter because they’ll actually eat it plus it’s easy {and cheap} to make.

They always enjoy looking out the back window at the trees while they eat. The only downfall with the oatmeal is that it can be quite messy since our not quite 2-year-old insists on feeding himself most of the time. After breakfast we get the boys changed. Daddy gets ready and leaves for work, and me and the boys head outside for some play time.

This is our family’s morning – fun and relaxed. It’s nice and probably one of my favorite times of the day. This is our real life: dirty tables, crayon murals on the wall, and toys everywhere. And I wouldn’t want it any other way because our life is filled with joy and love. Our life is beautiful.
