Christmas is our family’s favorite time of year, and for us it starts in mid-November! Christmas decorating is one of our most anticipated traditions that we all enjoy. Steve gets the Christmas boxes out of the shed and stacks them in the living room. Then we bring in the box with the Christmas Tree. The boys were so excited! And they couldn’t wait to help daddy put the tree together.
Graham was only 11 months old when we were doing this last year, so I don’t think he remembers it. This year he was mesmerized by the lights and tried so hard to help put ornaments on the tree. Dominic is now a Christmas decorating pro and put more ornaments on himself than either Steve or I did.
I love seeing all of our special ornaments on the tree. Each year I’m reminded of so many wonderful times as we hang them. We have the first set of ornaments that Steve and I ever bought, we pieced the set together ourselves to make a Harry Potter theme. Pictured above is the ornament that we got the day that Steve proposed at Biltmore. And each of our boys have a 1st Christmas ornament with their names and pictures. Over the weekend we bought a shooting star ornament for our daughter that we miscarried earlier this year. This December I have plans to do a Christmas countdown of activities and fun things for us to do together. The boys are going to be making some ornaments for us to add to the tree.
The boys made sure that they got to have some fun with the Christmas tree box and the bubble wrap. I wonder if the two of them will even be able to fit in the box together next year. They’re growing up so fast!
This is also the first year that we’ve ever decorated outside! Other years we’ve lived in apartments or condos and haven’t really been able to decorate outside. Last year we were worn out from our move at the end of November and decided to keep things simple and not decorate outside. But we’ve come to really love the small duplex that we live in. It’s perfect for us and we were excited to put up some outside decorations.
Then we finished off the evening looking at Christmas books. We keep these put away for most of the year, but they come out with our Christmas decorations and stay out until we put the decorations away. We love reading these books to our children; many of them are books from my childhood that I loved. Our reading time together is extra special when these books are out.
Christmas decorating marks the beginning of the Christmas season for us. I think next year we’ll have a new tradition – looking back at pictures from decorating previous years. Seeing how much our kids have grown, hopefully seeing how our family has grown and added more members. In the future we’ll be looking back at a house we no longer live in. And we’ll be remembering the special moments of decorating together as a family. We will treasure these photos and these memories for the rest of our lives and I think our children will treasure them too.
